Starting your crochet project – slip knot, chain, working into chain

The video below covers the steps necessary to start a project that is worked flat, in rows. I start with making slip knot, explain how to make chains and then show how to work into those chains, using an example of double stitch. I hope some of the advice in this video will help you enjoy these first steps more, as very often working that first row into the chains is the most frustrating part of a crochet project – it always takes longer, even after years of practice. So, please have a look and let me know what you think.

For those who really struggle with working their stitches into a chain, I firstly recommend to tackle a few projects made in the round – for example based on a granny square. This will allow you to gain confidence in crochet first and then come back to this. Alternatively you can try out the foundation stitches.

Once you have mastered this video, you can try some simple coasters – squares of double crochet stitches for example, or try out the lavender sachet or one of the easier hair scrunchies.

If you ever wonder what is the right place to insert your hook the following rows, this article can be of help.
