Choosing the yarn

Picking out the yarn for a project is one of the most exciting stages for me. A few things to hold in mind when choosing the yarn:

  • Ease of use: choose machine washable yarns, and, possibly the ones that can be thrown into a dryer
  • The material should be soft to the touch, and adapted to intended use and climate. 100% or blended cotton or wool, or 100% acrylic all work well
  • I prefer using 2 strands of sports weight yarn (intended for 3mm/US 2 1/2 needles) held together, but you can also use worsted/aran weight yarn (just 1 strand). Thinner yarn, 2 strands give a lighter, more drapery fabric
  • The smaller sized blanket requires 300-400g (11-14oz) of yarn.
  • I am planning on making some additional items that go with the blanket

I am planning on trying out some additional items to go with the blanket. This will be pure experimentation, but you will be welcome to join.

I am buying therefore 6 skeins of Twister Solid ( 55% cotton and 45% acrylic, 100 g/3.5 oz in 100 g/3.5 oz skein)by Hobbii for this project, as I’d like to test a cotton acrylic blend this time, and use a yarn that is more widely available. I’m getting 6 skeins in a beautiful beige colour (138 – oak). This will be my first time using this yarn, so I hope I’ve chosen well. I have no affiliation with Hobbii.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the yarn arrives before next weekend, so that I can start swatching then
