This is really nice! I’ve got a couple of skeins of laceweight yarn to use up. Do you think with small enough needles the pattern would come through? It could be a small blanket (say, just for the car seat or something) but I don’t want to knit something that just looks “holey”.

      Hi Christina,

I think it should work fine – it will depend on your yarn and needles selection.

I suggest you make a swatch – to see if you like the pattern, and to estimate, how many repeats you need to make. Don’t forget to block the swatch before measuring, and make sure to make it at least 15×15 cm (6x6in). I think if you keep the same number of repeats with laceweight on small needles, it’ll b e way too small.

Contact me if you need more help.

Hi, I really liked this pattern, its beautiful and though i messed up along the way and had to unravel and pick up stitches (which was incredibly frustrating and stressful as I started the blanket for a friend that is due tomorrow and I originally thought she was due in December!) but in the end I’m very pleased with it and grateful that you offered this awesome pattern for free. :)

thank you for this pattern that kept me busy all summer long, i’ve been doing two scarves in a light weight silk and mohair ..they had a lot of success !

I just looked at the pattern and I’m sure I’m just not thinking straight without the needles in my hand! But, the seed stitch for every row, I’m guessing it’s k1, p1, k1, p1 on the even rows and p1, k1, p1, k1 on the odd rows? That’s what I’m guessing.
If I read the written directions, I think I get it. When I look at the chart, I get confused. The chart look like you purl, purl, then knit across, purl, purl, etc. The written says p1, k1, p1, k1 all the way across.
I’m sure it would make sense if I just started it with needles in hand! I mean, look at all the beautiful blankets and no one else has asked that question!
    Thanks!

Hi Shireen. Thanks for your question!

The chart depicts only the lace pattern, not the seed stitch border. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask again if you need more help.

      Kind regards,

    Nadja

    Leyla,
If I use size 8 needles while knitting this pattern with two strands of lace yarn will it still show the pattern the way it does in your blanket? I purchased to skeins of hand dyed yarn so I am trying to make it go a long way for a baby blanket and I would like to follow your pattern as closely as possible. I am on a trip and left my needles at home so I’m hoping I can get the right size needle so that I don’t have to buy several :)
    Thanks!

      silkandwool

Hi Nadja! I would definitely swatch – make a smaller sample to see how yarn behaves and what sed 8’s, too, but with DK held double… Depending on your actual yarn, I would used size 3 to 5 needles. This, however, will give you less stitches per inch, so you would need to have more pattern repeats and so cast on more stitches.I would wildly guess that you’ll need twice as many repeats as there are in the pattern, but it’s really hard to say without a swatch… The pattern has quite detailed instructions on how to calculate new number of stitches to cast on.

    • 29
      silkandwool

Of course you can – that’s the beauty of knitting, you can change things to your liking. But, as in the question by Nadja just above, you need to use appropriate needle size and increase the number of pattern repeats.

Hi, I love this pattern ad can’t wait to get started! I am pretty new to knitting and wondered what the advantage of using 2 strands at one time is? Is it just to get a thicker blanket? Thanks! Jana

      silkandwool

      Hi Jana,

I wanted a quick knit, and didn’t have suitable yarn, so I used two strands. When you use thicker yarn and larger needles, you get larger stitches so you need less stitches and rows to cover the same area. You can either choose yarn that’s similar to mine (140 meters in 50 gr) held double and same needles. You can also use one strand and smaller needles. In that case you need to cast on more stitches than the pattern says, to get a blanket that’s wide enough. Or else, you can get a thicker yarn (about 70 m/140gr). It’s always a good idea to swatch to be sure that your item come out the right size. I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask more questions if you would like more guidance.

I love this blanket! I have three questions:
How much yarn is needed when using worsted weight?
    Is the border k1 p1 k1 p1 on the even rows and p1 k1 p1 k1 on the odd?
Is blocking necessary? I have an acrylic yarn I’d like to use but don’t want to be disappointed at the end when I can’t block it.
    Thanks for the beautiful pattern!

      silkandwool

Hi Tammy . I’m glad you like the blanket. To answer your questions, I did it using lighter weight, yarn sorry I cannot tell for sure. It would also depend how big you want it to be. If you’re on ravelry you can take a look at other people projects. The border is 4 sts. So on rs it’s k1p1k1p1, and on wrong side it’s p1k1p1k1. For blocking I cannot tell you for sure. I suggest you make a swatch and see if you like how it looks. I hear you can put acrylic through dryer to “block” it, but I never did so myself. So if you swatch you can try that, too. Let me know if you have more questions. Regards, Leyla.

Hi. I really like this but I am utterly confused. In your instructions it says for the main body 4 sts in seed stitch (k1p1k1p1) then 6 repeats of leaf pattern. Does this mean 6 repeats of row 1 of the leaf pattern or 6 repeats of all 20 rows of the leaf pattern?! Please explain…I really want to start this! Thanks :)

    • 47
      leilalieva

Hi Rosalind, every row of the blanket you start with 4 stitches of seed stitch, yhen you do 6 repeats of the corresponding row of the pattern and you finish the row with seed stitch border again. So in row 1 you do row 1 of lace pattern , in row 2 – row od the pattern etc. Hope this helps. If not, please let me know.

      • 48
        rosalind

So row one you have 4 sts of seed stitch, then repeat row one of the leaf pattern 6 times, then 4 sts of seed stitch. And you do this for every row like this for the entire leaf pattern 5 times? I think I have it haha

This is a fantastic pattern!!!!! It knitted up beautifully. Wish I didn’t have another project due next. i want to make one for myself. I’d add a picture of my blanket but there is not place to do that.

I need to do this in the color “natural” but yours is out of stock. Do you have another “natural”or a “white” that I can use? Can’t wait to work this one up!!! Thank you!

Dear Jean, the kit is managed by Craftsy, please get in touch with them regarding the yarn – I just wrote the pattern. I hope you can the colours that you need. If not, you can find the pattern for free on my website, and buy your own yarn. Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions about the pattern.

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful pattern. I have been hunting for a baby blanket pattern, as I have a new niece/nephew arriving in July. I have tried several and have either been dissatisfied or they haven’t worked, which has been very frustrating I was so delighted when I found this.

I must compliment you on your excellent set of instructions.

I am also going to knit the pattern with less panels and make ‘leafy scarfs’ I have recently made a beret which has a pretty eyelet pattern which will match beautifully – scarf/beret twin sets. The pattern has rib for the rim, however it can easily be subsituted with seed stitch.

    Thanks so much again!

It’s absolutely lovely to knit. So satisfying, becaust you are always doing something different. I must admit it took me a while to get my head around the repeats. I actually found it easier when I cast on the complete number of stitches (100). It’s going beautifully now.

All female members of my family are getting a scarf or cowl for Christmas. I am completely laden with 5ply in a variety of colours so I won’t even have to buy more yarn!! :-)

I will post photos of finished projects.

    Many thanks again,
    Catherine

    hello
I am knitting your leaf blanket, but I am a bit confused. I’v just done the border and going to start the main body. is the first row rs or ws?
plus it says to do 4 sts in the seed then the 6 repeats then the 4 seed st. I’m making mine 10 repeats but i know how to do that.
what confuses me is the next sentence knit 5 of the repeats, then the last repet do the rows from 1-12 once ok
so where is the pattern for the first row with the 6 repeats?
if you can write it out for me i would very much appreciate it.for the life of me i can’t seem to figure it out, lol.
    thanks.

    Tabby

assistance with getting started on this project please? I cast on 100 4 rows in seed stitch, simple. Starting the leaf pattern is a problem, I ended up with an odd number of stitches remaining at the end of the first row. Do I have 4 stitches in seed stitch for the border, p2, k13, p4, k13,p 4 etc followed by 4 stitches in seed stitch?

    • 61
      leilalieva

Hi Tabby! to make things easier, this is how the first row should looke like:
      k1, p1, k1, p1, (p2, k 13), p2, k1, p1, k1, p1
Repeat stitches in brackets for 6 times.
To help you, you may want to use stitch markers to separate the borders on each side, and each 15-stitch pattern repeat. Let me know if you have more questions.

I LOVE this pattern and thank you so much for offering it for free on Ravelry. I’ve also been knitting since I was a child, but have only ventured into lace patterns recently. I absolutely love this project and have had few turn out quite as nice as this one. I have been so impressed by the design and clarity of instructions. You did a beautiful job and I’m delighted with how my attempts have turned out. I just finished a slightly larger version for my niece, whose baby just arrived today (on her 30th birthday). It’s on the blocking board right now, and I can’t wait to send it to her. Thank you again!

Hello, first off, thank you so much for composing this wonderful pattern! I’ve been trying to knit it up, but I admit I’m having a bit of trouble with YO’s. This is my second foray into YO’s and after two tries, no matter what I do, it’ll be going great and then I’ll come to a repeat that has two extra stitches, and I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong as I’m following the pattern. Would you happen to have any tips on how to do YO’s correctly?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    • 66
      leilalieva

Hi Britta, sorry for a delay in reply, I am not really sure what your difficulty may be – we all knit in different styles. I know from comments on Ravelry that people using English/continental method often have problems with this pattern, as it uses yarn overs on the wrong side too… May be try looking that up? If not, may be you can send me some pictures of what you are doing, and I can try and help you figure it out?

        Catherine

        Hi Leila and Britta,

I was a bit confused about YO as well. However, there are lots of videos online that show you how to do it.

        Hope this helps.

        Cheers,
        Catherine

Hi. I am still learning about knitting but am totally in love with this blanket. I am having great difficulty reading and understanding this pattern.
It says cast on 100 stitches and I finish the border but then in the leaf pattern it says to work in multiples of 15????? I am really confused because if I do it in multiples of 15 with the 2 at the end or beginning i am left with 10 stitches at the end of the row that I am not sure what to do with. Am I reading this wrong??

  19. 72
    Betty

I tried sending an email, but my mail said it was an invalid address.

I do not understandcwhat it means to cast on with two strands of yarn.

Also, in readingbthe questions of other knitters, I am a new beginner and want to make this for a friend’s baby.

Can you add notes to the pattern that include your responses to those who have questions? As I read their questions, I realize that they are asking questions about problems that I would have encountered if Imwere brave enough to start the pattern.

    • 73
      leilalieva

Hi Betty, to cast on with two strands of yarn means you take two strands of yarn from two balls/skeins and use them as if it were one.

I am well aware that my instructions are not worded in the way English/Amarican knitters are used to, and may be confusing. I am planning in rewriting the pattern, but at the moment I do not have time or energy – I work 6 days a week full time, study and take care of two small kids. As this is not my source of revenue, but a gesture to share what I came up with everyone for free, I hope you will understand that I cannot make you request my priority at this point in time. I hope you will still make the blanket, and please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

    Rosa

Hello, I’ve read the comments from other knitters and noticed that their instructions says to cast on 100. The instructions I received (from Craftsy) says to cast on 115. Is this a typo? It does not make sense to cast on 115 because it says to do the seed pattern “over the even number of stitches”. 115 is an odd number.

    • 75
      leilalieva

Hi Rosa, I think Crafts have changed the pattern a bit as they are also selling kits with yarn that’s thinner than mine. As that lace pattern repeat is 15 stitches, it means their pattern is one repeat wider than the original one. You can still make seed stitch even if you have the odd number of stitch, only you would have to start the second row with a knit stitch . I guess this change has been overlooked, I’ll make sure that’s fixed. Happy knitting!

If anyone has tried to make this pattern into a larger throw or queen size bed blanket size, would you share the cast on number and pattern changes, please? If anyone has found a video tutorial for this stitch on you tube, would you also share the link, please? It would give me more confidence to try the pattern. Thank you again to you the pattern author. Also, if anyone has created a slochy be any in this pattern, would you like to share it, please? I am so happy to find this pattern and hope that I too can create a blanket and more with this pattern.😚

Amelia, maybe people will give you more information/links, you can also check projects on Ravelry if you a member. But if you want to make a larger version, you’ll be safer to make your own swatch and calculations. There are instructions in the pattern, but I will be happy to help, if you are stuck.

I’m anxious to start this blanket for my grandson expected soon, but I’m confused by the pattern. Knowing I can adjust the leaf repeats, the pattern calls to cast on 100 stitches, but that doesn’t mathematically match the pattern. 4 seed stitches, 6 repeats of leaf pattern (6 x 17 = 102 stitches), 4 seed stitches equals a total of 110 stitches I should cast on. Am I interpreting this correctly. I think it’s a classic, beautiful pattern.

    Rachel

I am loving this pattern, but I think I have encountered an error. I was doing fine until I hit row 15: (p2, k2, yo, k1, skp, k8). Are the rows where the k2/p2s line up supposed to stay lined up through the entire pattern or do they move over by one starting at row 15? I had 7, not 8, stitches left when I got to that part. Same for row 16. Any help is appreciated.

    • 86
      leilalieva

Hi Rachel, thank you for choosing the pattern. The stitches should line up, there’s no shift. However, I know for sure that there is no mistake in the pattern. It has been tested rigourously, and many people have made it over the years. To catch there you’re making a mistake, tink back 1 or two rows, and place a stitch market between each pattern repeat. Count the the stitches in each repeat, there should be 15. Recount the stitches after each row, to make sure there are still 15. Usually, it’s the yarn overs before purl stitch that are the problem, if I recall correctly, they tend to disappear, if you are not careful. O hope this helps, and you are able to continue. If not, let me know, and I will try to help further. Regards, Leyla

    Hi!
This is a beautiful blanket. I’m not sure anyone can help me. By the time I get to rows 6 and 7 I have extra stitches. I am very careful with my YO’s I’m not sure what I am doing wrong. I Started with 100 Stitches did Seed stitch on first 4 then the written pattern which should leave me with 4 stitches at the end for the border right? I’m sure it is something I’m missing or doing but cannot figure it out. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. PS I have redone this not kidding at least 10 times and still get extra stitches.

I love the pattern but i cant seem to get passed row 4 or 5 when i reach the 2 sts before the 4 st border it’s like i run our of yarn to finish the row i tried 100 st and 106 st because in one spot it says to co 100 sts then multiples of 15 plus 2 so i am all confused and need help please thank you :)

    • 91
      leilalieva

Hi Megan, thank you for your message. The pattern is correct, but it is common for people to have difficulties around these rows. The best way is to use stitch markers to separate pattern repeats. So at the end of row 4 count your stitches and make sure you have 100. The stitch patter itself is a multiple of 15 plus 2, and you need 4 stitches on the each side of the blanket for the border. Then place the stitch markers as follows: first one after 4 stitches – that’s your border, and then after 15 stitches 6 times, and last one one after 2 stitches – you should have 4 stitches left for the second border. Now start row 5. After finishing each 15-stitch repeat, count the new stitches you have just made and make sure there are still 15. This should help you understand where your problem is. I hope this helps, but if you still have difficulty, please let me know! Regards, Leyla

Hi Leila, so after the last 15 sts i would put a st marker have 2 then another st marker then 4 for the border?

        Thank you
        Megan

        • 93
          leilalieva

Yes, that’s correct! This way you will separate 4 stitches in each side for the borders, 2 sts at the end of right rows before the border (they are the 2 stitches at the beginning of the wrong side rows after the border), and the 6 repeats of the 15 stitches in brackets. Hope this makes sense?

I am about to start knitting this leafy blanket pattern.
I want to repeat the pattern 8 times and need help with calculating the amount of stitches to start. 15X8=120 plus 8 stitches for the side borders. Why do you add another 2 stitches for he pattern to line up?

    Hello,

I really want to make this blanket but have struggled tremendously with the instructions. Can you please clarify what this means:

Knit for 5 repeats of the leaf pattern, then knit rows 1-12 of the leaf pattern once.

I am very confused by this instruction.
    Thank you!
