I whipped up this pretty scarf in two days – I’d say about 3-4 hours of work altogether. I called it Nicois, to honor this lovely town of Nice that’s become our home a year ago.
I used exactly 1 ball of Katia Darling yarn (60% merino, 40% nylon; 190m/50 g or 207 yds/1.76 oz – fingering/4-ply weight) and 3.5mm/E hook. This is a self-striping yarn with longish colour runs.
My scarf is slightly over 2m (7 feet) long and 4 cm (1.75 in) wide.
I started with 398 chains. To make the pattern work the best you need to a number of chains that’s divisible by 8 and 6 additional stitches (n*8+6). When I was casting on, I was counting stitches in eights until I got a string that was long enough, and then added 6 more chains.
I use US terminology in the pattern. ch – chain, sl st – slip stitch, sc – single crochet, dc – double crochet,
Round 1. Sc in second chain from the hook, and in every ch across. Do not turn, make 2 more sc in the last ch (3 sc in total in the last ch). Continue working in the bottom part of the ch, making one sc in every stitch. Make 1 more sc in the last ch (3 sc altogether – 1 in the beginning of the round, and 2 in the end, I do not count the ch that was skipped in the very beginning). Join the round with a sl st.
Round 2. Ch1, sc in the same stitch, (skip next three sc, ch 5, sc in the 4th sc) until you get to the end of the stripe, before turning around the edge. You should make your sc in the 1st of the 3 sc’s that were made in the same ch. ch 5, sc in the 3rd of these 3sc’s. You have turned around the edge. (skip next three sc, ch 5, sc in the 4th sc)until you get to the end of the stripe, before turning around the second edge. ch 5, join the round with sl st.
Round 3. 3 sl st the the first ch-5 space. ch1, sc in the same ch-5 space. (ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 space) across. Ch 7 instead of ch5 for the arcs that turn around the edge. Join the round with a sl. st.
Round 4. 3 sl st the the first ch-5 space. ch1, sc in the same ch-5 space. (5 dc in the next sc, sc in the next ch-5 space, ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 space) across until you make sc in ch-7 space. Ch 3, 5 dc in the next sc, ch 3, sc in the next ch-7 space, ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 space. (5 dc in the next sc, sc in the next ch-5 space, ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 space) across until you make sc in ch-7 space. Ch 3, 5 dc in the next sc, ch 3, sc in the next ch-7 space, ch 5, join the round with a sl st.
Finish off, weave in the ends. Block.
