This stitch was a revelation to me when I first learnt about it several years ago. I now rarely use a chain to start any projects where the first row or rond consists of the same stitches across – be it single, half double or double crochet stitches.
I find that a chain beginning in such cases is often not elastic enough, and using a larger hook does not really solve the issue for me.
